Hi, My name is Chris from Melbourne Australia. I have been meditating for a little while now. I discovered mindfulness meditation a couple of years ago and have used it as a way of helping to deal with significant illness that resulted in me having to give up work. I am still unable to work but my meditation practise has really helped with what I have to deal with. I am always looking to expand my practise with greater knowledge. Day 1 of the Summit today was amazing – really looking forward to day2!

Welcome everyone to the experience. This is my first approach to Mindfulness, and I find it quite interesting, because it seems it can connect us to the real present, which it´s the only real time that exists. This summit seems very promising in order to provide us tools to achieve a more loving life experience. Thanks for being there.

I am from Australia. I have a yoga practice and see the clearest opportunity for observing myself is in my relationships. The closer the relationship, the more expectations I have of myself and the other. The more pain. The more opportunity to cultivate helpful qualities. I look forward to seeing and hearing the application of traditional time-tested wisdom to our relationships today. Together we can be part of the evolution of human consciousness.

Looking forward to this summit. I am from Canada (usually Ontario but currently in Edmonton). I have been on my mindfulness path for 11 years, but still have so much to learn. Relationships are so complicated, but I am beginning to appreciate the importance of being able to step outside of my past so that I can be in the moment and really listen to the other person. I am also working on choosing how I will react, before I knee jerk react. That is truly difficult. I look forward to all of your thoughts and ideas!

I look forward to touching in to that place with you all – and thank you for our generous teachers and their offerings.

Hi! I’m Brian (and not “Brain”, as I mistakenly wrote earlier!) and I live in the Midwest (United States). I’ve been a practicing Buddhist for about 8 years, and have emphasized mindfulness and Insight Meditation through Gil Fronsdal (at IMC). I’ve found my studies to be helpful and I feel that I have truly discovered who I am (someone imperfect and impermanent); however, through the course of my study, and the changes that evolved, my relationship fell apart — my spouse and I realized our differences. I’m recently separated and I’m hoping to learn more about relationships, both romantic and otherwise.

    • Margaret May 17, 2017 at 5:50 pm - Reply

Brian, thank you for sharing so honestly. It’s sad when a marriage dissolves, although it’s important to really see when the energy has left the relationship. When that happens, staying together “burns your own internal circuits” and freeing each other to find a relationship that is fulfilling for both is kind, even loving. My heart goes out to you in this. When my own marriage ended after over 30 years, I realized what a disservice it had been to remain together long past when it was over. Best of luck to you.

Just last Sunday, I went for dinner in Auckland, New Zealand, invited by a NZ Nepali family, that I met in Kathmandu in 1958, on my very km ate O.E. as I approached my 50th Birthday.
At the dinner, apart from my host’s family was Tai Kwon do, international referee and me. The dinner of Dahl, baht, takiri with goat meat was traditional Nepali except we ate with knife and fork instead of with our right hand fingers. The meal was expertly cooked and presented and it took me back to meals I had in Kathmandu. They drove me home later some 15 km each way. The next morning, I had a warm glow of love still with me, from a very convivial night, with only a small glass of wine, but with kind love all round.

Greetings from Iran. After years living outside my country, now I understand the message of great Persian poets like Rumi and Khayam. I learned how we have forgotten about heart as the place of consciousness. How opening our hearts and connecting to the other can help our spirit grow. I wish to learn to stay grounded when facing challenges in relation with my parents, friends and coworkers. So I would get ready for the relationship that I know I can have. Thank you for this great opportunity.

Thank you deeply from my most sincere center heart – this summit is helping me through the most meaningfully transformative time in my life thus far. A time where mindfulness, loving-friendliness and simply the basic right to be are supplying a flower at the end of a gun rather than ammunition for harm. These talks, participation, community and more speak to the very real interconnectedness of us all. Thank you for an awakening that I now choose to embrace and remain in tune with through tick and thin. For myself just the video preview for tonight has provided for insightful contemplation and direct healing. Love

Hi Daphne, thank you 🙂 you have just articulated what I’ve been attempting to communicate to our friends/family who have been somewhat confused that my husband and I are ‘separated’ and yet still spend a lot of time together. “Becoming healthy for ourselves, our children and our relationship” Yes! That’s what it has been for us also, wanting to both work on ourselves first before a ‘new’ relationship…not a ‘restored or mended’ relationship… but a new one can be possible for the future. Go well with your new future together

Hi I am Tonya from Sarasota, FL, and it is so incredible/wonderful to see comments from all over this planet. I am a Jain by choice, past life Brahmaloka memories, not so many Earth incarnations. I just checked the meaning of the mindfulness movement on Google, being present and awakening to the moment, watching our thoughts flow, maybe no shenpa :), I am brand new to this mindful movement. Yet it is all really ancient, I see this. And mindful relationship, well I am curious. Perhaps we see our interactions flow in a direction of our choosing. I am honored to be present for this Summit.

It is so lovely to read all the comments and I feel a sense of global connection and relationship already….I am very excited to participate in this network and look deeper at this subject of relationship. As social creatures we are (mostly) in relationship with others, however I am particularly interested as well, in the exploration of relating to myself. Historically I struggled to have a relationship with myself never mind anyone else… yet through mindfulness this has changed radically – the quote Susan said by John Tarrant Roshi that attention is pure love really struck a chord and resinates with me, so I am looking forward to the discussions and talks unfolding over the next few days. I am called Hannah and I live in Hampshire, England (UK). Much gratitude to everyone who has made this possible.

    Hello everyone,
So moving to read all these wonderful voices. I am Cecilia, originally from Mexico City, now living not so far from it. I am a school teacher, a mom of two girls and I have been married to the love of my life for 19 years. I have learned that the only way to truly have meaningful relationships is by having an open heart to the tenderness of other hearts. We are all achy in one way or another and our pain can be such that we hurt ourselves and others. My work as a school teacher, as a wife and a mom requires so much open-heartedness but it is a moment to moment practice. This summit is a reminder to me that how we relate to ourselves and others requires total presence and getting out from our inner world to meet others. Looking forward to it

    Meg, from New Zealand,
I wish more than anything to BE love, give love and receive love in my life …. in all my interactions with people and with my children, close friends, siblings etc
To learn how to love freely without expectations, including myself (know I am loved and am loveable) …. and to view difficult conversations and interactions through the lens of love … so as to feel compassion for the other rather than being defensive or attacking or uncaring/neutral is what I hope to more and more be able to BE and DO ….I think Rick and Susan have the deep understanding and expertise to further this for me!
I thank them both for this opportunity to more deeply plant love in my attention and intention.

Bonjour! Hi! I’m François from Gatineau, Québec, Canada. I’ve integrated contemplative practices into my daily life a few years ago. I find that mindfulness is a powerful tool that enables me to understand my own conditioning and patterns and see clearly how they manifest in my relationships. I find that the area of relationships is a wonderful and intense place to develop self-awareness and experience inner transformation. The practice of mindfulness and Brahma-viharas have supported me in many ways through the ending, creation and continuation of many relationships. I’m looking forward to learn more about this subject and apply the teachings to my direct experience! Thank you so much for offering this!

Hi … Niki — Canadian Belgian floating between Switzerland and France and after many years of movement… finally starting to touch the ground and grow roots (metaphorically and literally 🙂 A ‘newby’ (as of two years) to mindfullness and meditation… so much to learn still but already experiencing benefits and nice openings. Mother of two kids (10 and 11 years old) and fully aware that pre-adolescent years followed by full adolescence, is going to be a challenging period for me as a parent. All relationships are wonderful and yet I still struggle to know how to ‘do’ them well… how not to loose my own true self in the process and yet be open enough to make enough room for the other person. I have very much enjoyed David Richo’s ‘How to be an Adult in Relationships’ and feel that it speaks very much to my ‘dream’ vision of what a healthy relationship could look and feel like. Happy to read through my fellow participants… I can almost imagine us all tucked away in front of our computers… head phones, perhaps, or a quiet living room late in the evening… but I already feel a nice camaraderie and shared purpose. How lovely. xx

Hello this is Sharron from the backwoods of British Columbia Canada. My hope is to extricate myself from the past experiences of a relationship gone off the rails. I chose to stay in this relationship because of love but that love is becoming twisted into distrust and inner grumblings that no longer sound like love to me. I do not want to become a bitter, distrustful person. I do want to see that this too is a lesson for me to learn and hopefully to learn it well, that love may continue to be what motivates and sustains me.
Thank you for that first video, Dr. Hanson. It reassures me my intentions can become reality if I can learn the skill of training my thoughts to be higher than old patterns and habits.

I’m Nick from London UK. This looks like it will be a very enlightening and moving experience. WIthout wanting to pre-empt what we will learn from 17th May, the two very engaging and thoughtful videos here seem to take very different paths . On the one hand Susan Piver says we cannot choose whom we love, while Rick Hanson says we can love at will. I suppose both could be true.Getting my head around that paradox is going to be one great reason to tune into the summit !

This seminar comes at the right time as I’m just starting a new relationship. We are both committed buddhists and have already talked extensively about falling in love, attachment, mindfulness and awareness of our emotions within the relationship, the decision to work at the relationship when things get hard and the sincere love that comes from it. We are both seeing the relationship as a spiritual path without loosing track of our bouddhist path and the importance of developing boddhicitta. Also, to me, thanks to my own buddhist practice, it’s the first time that a relationship has been able to heal the wounds from my first relationship that were still very deeply present in me and made me scared of getting emotionally involved again. We are going to watch this summit together and I’m looking forward to the sharing between us that will inevitably follow.

Many wellness classes, therapy, groups, and reading have left me intellectually exhausted. On the other hand, I have space because of forgiveness and a lack of bitterness because it’s a waste of time and unattractive. I am open to the adventure of being curious about someone new. Raucous conversations and toe- curling sex. I think that will do it.

May all of us, especially my brothers and sisters attending the summit, know the power of truly opening our hearts to one another.

PS, I look forward to learning a bit about some of you in the comments.

I am Patrick, 50, living in my home country, France and won’t be therefore able to share this event live with you guys.

Mindfulness, the continuous attention to my inner mood was a revelation 5 y. ago and has become subsequently an indispensable and amazingly life changing practice : most of all, I appreciate the lowering of my reactivity and the inner peace which tends to become my stable equilibrium (well,I was quite angry today, that’s life folks !

Concerning relationships, I have to admit that I am completely ignorant in that domain. Is it due to my poor & tumultuous professional life ? to a fear of engaging in a relationship as told me recently an old colleague who was once in love with me and is now a good friend living far from where I live ? There might be many other reasons, but, well, I have to say that my attention to inner peace is definitely my priority and so I’m not chasing or considering any relationship.

As anyone I guess, I deeply revere deep and lasting relationships (look at our new president Emmanuel Macron and Brigitte Trogneux his wife ! Their love is so tangible ! and he often says that he can’t do anything without her presence or advice. That’s truly beautiful I have to say. Good for them and fine if I stumble into such a relationship as I am not so young anymore…

I’d love that too, actually, but well, I should first of all consider living truly in the present moment and remember each time this could be the last one.

Look forward to hear & watch this event.

    Take care you all !

Hello, my name is Aron from the United States and live close to Columbus, Ohio. I’ve been practicing some sort of spirituality for the last 20 years grounded in my Jewish background as well as by exploring various traditions suc as well as various mindful and contemplative traditions around the world as well as the various perspectives coming out of science more recently. Even if I feel right to follow many of the practices of my ancestors, I think learning from all is the center of what I wish to do to live a more life as well as exploring ecological thought related to them. I’ve been a fan of Ram Dass in his efforts as well and what I’ve watched and listened to via this website. I feel like I’ve been enriched by it so I look forward to leaning more. Mindfulness seems a process of awakening from learning techniques to improve it. I see no reason to deny the wisdom of on tradition to learn from others and their perspective. I also look forward to the dialogue.

  382. Shelley May 10, 2017 at 10:45 pm - Reply

Greetings from Pennsylvania, USA. I’ve been practicing mindfulness for nearly 7 years now. I really, really need to learn more and practice more diligently in respect to my immediate family (my parents and brothers). A few months ago, I reached extreme burnout with my family, and I chose to abruptly end all communication with them. I absolutely still love them (although it is difficult to do most times), but I cannot allow them to be in my life at this time. The story is quite long and it goes back many, many years. I got to the place where continuing my relationships with my family was nothing less than burdensome and emotionally exhausting, and especially so with my father (empathy burnout!). It’s been a long, hard road to travel with my family, and it was absolutely time for me to choose myself over them for the moment. This was not an easy or instant decision for me to make; it developed over many years. Currently, I’m a Junior in college majoring in Applied Psychology and minoring in Clinical Psychology, with a desire to work in Positive Psychology and Mindfulness-Based Cognitive Therapy. I’m very interested in learning more about mindfulness and choosing love as Dr. Rick Hanson touched on in his brief excerpt, as well as learning from all of the other summit speakers. I believe there is so much more that I can do to remedy the fractured relationships with my family, and I’m absolutely willing to do more, but I need strong and sound direction in order to do so, and I believe I’ll find that direction in this summit. I believe that what I will learn and take away from this summit will help me in my personal life and relationships, as well as in my abilities to help my future clients with theirs. Thank you so very much for this incredible opportunity; it surely is good word in due season for me, and I’m excited to dive right in and cultivate my mindfulness garden! Thank you, thank you, thank you.

    • arie May 13, 2017 at 11:34 am - Reply

Dear Shelly, what works is for you to start loving yourself. You can look up Louise Hay Mirror work or some alternative. Next step is to reframe what happened in a positive light (give up your right to be a victim and view what happened as a gift). Third step is to love your family irrespective of how you perceive them or their behavior – and they will transform really quick.

I’m Melody from South Africa. I love the phrase ‘spiritual practioner’ – I’ve never heard that before. I think I am not so much interested in romantic love as love of people I encounter – and often clash with – in daily life. I want to learn to relate mindfully with others and to shift the gaze from myself to the other. And for it to be a gaze of acceptance, compassion and love.

I’m a zen student happy to practise and learn with everyone through this upcoming event. The sneak previews have definitely whetted my appetite for all the other talks on such an important and relevant topic.

Suddenly single at midlife… this is probably the best time for me to look inward and assess how best to have meaningful connectedness with all sentient beings while at the same time honouring my own sanctity. This summit is very good timing for me, indeed.

As a compassionate and empathetic person, I’m hoping to get practical tips on how to get back to being centered and mindful while dealing with others (not just in intimate relationships) without necessarily absorbing their energies (sadness, pain, frustration, etc).

Looking forward to interacting with you all during this summit.

Relating to the generating of love Rick spoke about along with Susan’s phrase attention is highest form of love. Looking forward to hearing more and very grateful for this generous offering. Have found that at times when I exerted myself in difficult to listen situations to stay with the person speaking, something happened that bonded me enough to see and experience appreciation for that person and their perspective that I couldn’t have imagined before. I think there is something to this attention I want to learn more about. Gratitude from Mary in Colorado USA

love what Rick said about ‘generating’ emotions or loving at will!

as G I Gurdjieff put it: ‘outwardly, play a role, inwardly, do not identify’.
i’ve noticed if effort is made to be happy/at peace and a smile is ‘put-on’ [generating beneficial states of mind], the body ‘goes along’ sometimes . . .

Greetings from DownUnder and on the Coast of NSW! I TOTALLY APPRECIATE YOUR GENEROUS OFFERING TO SHARE MINDFULNESS. My first experience of the many gifts of mindfulness dropped through cyber space some 4 years ago, at the exact time I needed support as I sorted through a challenging phase of life. Typically of my woolly mind in time I lessened the practice but never lost the connection and I often smile when I experience an ‘inner prompt’ to be aware of my actions and thinking. It most often happens when I begin to eat which sets a thread to follow through the day. On May 8 I turned 69 (OMGoddess!) and am set for a miracle or three to gently float into my life. Remembering to be mindful is a perfect miracle to begin with! walk gentle Christine

Thank you for providing this opportunity!

I am new to the world of mindfulness. I am someone who tends to be distracted. I often have to really diligent to control my environment to maintain focus in my daily activity, however, I would love to be able to be more aware and attentive to not just work, but also my relationships to loved ones, communities I belong to, and also the planet we all inhabit.

If anyone has any suggestions about where to start in terms of resources for learning and growing in mindfulness, I would welcome thoughts. I live in a small town where there is not a organized mindfulness community.

That said, I do want to be sensitive and respectful to the space of this comment board and not co-op the space.

Blessings to everyone on your respective journeys.

with so much gratitude to be here with all of you, teachers/students – and that my life has taken this turn toward the dharma – and may we all continue to develop the wisdom to be in relationship as best we can with each other – and we have such a lovely world – and although great chaos and violence brought it/us about – only humans can tap into the wisdom to save the world/us all for as long as possible – being ever so mindful of anicca

I’m Marilyn from Sterling, Illinois. I’ve viewed both excerpts and can’t wait to hear these teachings in their entirety. Dr. Hanson included “parents with dementia” in his list of those we may be loving and loving my mother who has dementia is my spiritual practice these days. She’s easy and good-humored, but she’s my MOM and there’s some baggage there that gets in the way of my giving the attention to her (that Susan described) that she deserves and that she needs. I was moved already by these brief clips. Thank you!!
