This should be taught at school already from the first class! Love the reminder about “the zoo”!
Fabulous talk. It hit home on so many levels. Such a liberating feeling (and relief!) to make sense of these emotions and vulnerabilities and give myself some credit for my behaviour rather than a beating for perceived emotional immaturity.
Rick, you are a breath of fresh air. As I listen to you, the world becomes a softer more loving place. Your personal story helps me to connect with how we can heal and flourish regardless of a difficult beginning. Keep on keeping on! Green light! Green light!
Wonderful Talk Rick. Thank you so much again for your wisdom, but above all your open heart and willingness. I consider you my teacher since Buddha´s brain to foundations of well being, I enjoy reading and listening to what you share. I am stunned with gratitude with what you bring to me and to the world
I love Rick, in the broadest sense of the word; always receive so much from his presentations.
Thank you, Dr. Hanson. I love watching your speak and learn so much from your insight and wisdom. I feel grateful. Excited to share this with my partner.
A particularly mindful business acquaintance, whom I admired as a gentle leader, spoke profound words about his newlywed status:
“The most significant change for me in marriage is always keeping my spouse in mind.”
Through Dr. Hanson’s presentation I would now add to that statement; “..while staying fully present with my ‘self’.
Thank you, doc.
So true. We must be mindful of both peeps in the relationship. Thanks for sharing.
Absolutely wonderful talk! Thank you!!
Thank you for the teachings, Rick.
And to the organizers and interviewers.
Many bows and much gratitude to you all. -/lisa
Wonderful talk on relationships. It was good to be reminded of all the ways our ancient amygdala brain can sabotage our intimate relationships.
He quoted the great mystical Christian, Fr. Thomas Keating, saying something like that a life lived without contemplation is a recipe for disaster. Obviously, the very scientific Dr. Hanson brings together science and true mindfulness in a beautiful way. What a gift to the world!!
My only critique- Why was there no eye contact with him? Seems antithetical to the subject discussed.
thanks for the opportunity to listen a wise man
I appreciate it very much and hope to honor this privilege by really practicing his teaching
I really appreciate the WAY Dr Rick Hanson speaks in a gentle and confident manner. I devoured every insight with deep gratitude. I feel a kinship with his soulful message. Thank you Dr Rick Hanson. ?
I really enjoyed this intro. I gained a lot of meaningful insight from this. Thank you so much for sharing this wonderful knowledge for free. 🙂
Comprehensive and clear and very helpful. Rick knows his stuff and communicates it well. Grateful for this.
This was great. I tried to share it on Facebook and it posted as some annoying cartoon video. Too bad. I would have liked to share the original content and promote the summit. Hope the glitch regarding the link can be fixed!
Very nice and profound explanation. Thank you Dr. Hanson !
This was a great talk!!! I enjoyed stopping, taking the time to listen and hear things that will help me in my relationships. Thank you
If we could get this wisdom to a large number of people in the global village it would change the world for the better. I think it must be the responsibility of all of us who have glimpsed these truths to do whatever we can to spread them as widely as possible

Agree. We are truly blessed to have been exposed to the expertise of this man. I am trying to share his Taking in the good practice with my friends. It has changed my life and is starting to rewrite my brain.
Lots of good advice. Thank you. The three foundations for a good relationships was enlightening. Using the examples Rick put forth I feel somewhat empowered to give it a go.
Thank you. Very practical and down to earth advice. I enjoyed the warmth and calm of your talk.
thank you very much for this helpful input!
Brought clearly together intimacy and dependency, and the benefit of awareness within these.
I just love Rick Hanson! What he says is so real, so practical, so useful for day-to-day-life. And it’s inbedded in a lively spirituality. Thank you!
Excellent content – multifaceted with functionality – a bit to rapid fire
It leaves me wanting more.
Blessing on this offering, I wish it would all stick like velco?. I only listened to Rick tonight and he as always was amazing. Deep heart mind soul touching advice and insight to making my life work toward my awakening as a human being.
I wish I could ask just one relationship question.
in love, thank you,
michael grace bauman
mind stopping – heart opening – Dr Hansen sheds lights on all my circuits! I especially appreciate his reference to ghosts of generations past. I have always held a positive sense of Ancestors around me and learned to stop expressing such as it resulted in me being seen as ‘crazy’. I just turned 69 and each time I listen to folk researching the brain, gut, heart combinations I am grateful to acknowledge myself as always been partially ‘awake’…I now plan to focus on moving to be fully awake/alert for the rest of my time on earth! Especially appreciate information on intimacy and autonomy! and 20 / 80 ration of observation! thank you for today which I embrace with gratitude!
.
Felt like systemically summoned to attend class as it should be taught in all schools.
Lovely guy. Fantastic information!
Thanks ???
Wonderful. As always, I love Rick’s practicality as well as his wisdom, and enjoy the fact that this was filmed outdoors in Marin County—Thanks for this!
This video by Rick Hansen was very timely for me. I was able to see how easy it is to get caught up in a past negative event in a relationship and forgive myself for this negativity bias. I was able to understand this as part of how the brain works and to see that deliberately focusing on the positive aspects of the relationship and my own loving feelings is the best path forward rather than rehashing old wounds
Very insightful.
So rich! Jam-packed with gems. Willl want to watch this again…some takeaways:
Love the concept of the menagerie within; liked the three main elements of a healthy relationship: 1) virtue (don’t be a jerk; take responsibility for your stuff; have integrity) 2) benevolence (be kind and have good will for others) and 3) engagement (repair is critical, know your partner, be generous)
I love Esther Perel’s work which also explores the dialectic between autonomy/independence and connection/relatedness, and liked the way Rick conceptualizes this dialectic as two wings of one bird.
Thank you so much for this interview!
Thanks, Dr. Hanson, for sharing your wisdom and experiences with us. It was an extraordinary moment being watching your interview and the tips you gave us in order to have a more conscious life. Very nice topic, the related about the bases of a healthy relationship: Virtue, Benevolence, and Engagement, pretty important to keep them in count. Thanks a lot.
You’ve given me a lot to think about and practice. I love the compassion and understanding for your listener that permeates everything you say and the wisdom you’ve shared so clearly is invaluable. Thank you!
As one to grow up in a positive world and yet to feel so unworthy and to grow from there
I always learn so much every time I read or listen to you Dr Rick Hanson.
Thank you for a reminder of life’s ease! Pearl Dinkelacker
Amazing Work. Rick’s words just flow like a peaceful river of insight and understanding. I am so grateful that I have listened to this session on Healthy Relationships and will use the information personally and professionally.
Thank you…A gratitude moment.
I’m a big Rick Hanson fan, and thoroughly enjoyed this talk.
Question — Are transcripts available for each video?
Excellent first talk! Covers a lot of terrain with clarity and compassion, esp. the elements around relationship in the final section.
Powerful and excellent opening talk.
Liked the 20/80 idea and remembering to apply mindfulness when triggered.
Well, I need just one word to describe this video…Extraordinary!
A short but completely stand-alone course in how to be a contented adult who can gracefully, mindfully, and compassionately balance their own needs with those of others. Wonderful! I’ll listen again and again and share this widely – but I promise: only with people who are interested 😉
Great information, very succinct, clear and backed up with examples. Quite useful with all of our relationships!
THANKS RICK.
HOW CAN WE GET THIS AMAZING INSIGHT ON NATIONAL TV–ALL NETWORKS IN ALL COUNTRIES!!!
I’m so grateful for the advice.
Namaste ??
My take away: ‘Neurons that fire together wire together’ …we are able to break the circuit of habitual reaction when someone or somebody upsets us. To quote Dr Rick;… ‘ it’s important to go mindful to what is occuring and holding that negative emotion/feeling in a space of ‘untroubled awareness’, “the nature of awareness being ; it itself is neither tainted or harmed by what it represents”… when you do that you stop the reinforcing of the negative reaction ..a circuit breaker’
So helpful. Will order cd & listen repeatedly. Thank again.
“If you’re not stunned by gratitude, you’re not paying attention” 🙂 Love the awe inspiring evolutionary perspective from Rick!
Will there be transcripts? I can’t stand watching people talk on video or tv. Much rather just read it.
My bad, I just turned the phone over and am listening.
